At 9.5 P.M. on 22nd February, the Blakeney Coxswain was informed by the Coastguard that a flare had been seen between Blakeney and Wells.

The Pulling and Sailing Life-boat Caroline was launched at 9.45 P.M. in a moderate N.W. breeze, with a moderate sea, but on reaching the bar she found that owing to the ebb tide there was not enough water to get over, nor could the boat return to her moorings. She waited until 5 A.M. next morning, when the tide had risen sufficiently. Mean- while the Wells Pulling and Sailing Life-boat Baltic had been launched at 10 P.M. She searched along the coast for about eight miles, and then went out to sea, but was unable to find any vessel in need of help.
