The sloop Chester- field, of Lynn, whilst bound to Hull, laden with gravel, stranded on the Inner Sinks on the 9th September.

Coxswain Cross immediately assembled his crew and proceeded to the vessel in the boarding Life-boat. On arrival it was found that the sea was sweeping right over the vessel and that she was filling with water. The sloop's small boat, which had been launched, was swamped. As the three men on board were in considerable peril owing to the heavy ground sea, Coxswain Cross ad- vised them to abandon their vessel without delay. They took his advice and very shortly after they had been rescued, the vessel broke up..
