The H.M.S Nith

A sad accident involving the loss of five lives occurred on the evening of 1st May to a Coastguard boat belonging to Shingle Street. The boat earlier in the day had been to Aldeburgh, and when returning to Shingle Street capsized near the mouth of the river, where the tide was running strongly. Two of the men managed to get ashore and another was washed up dead, but the bodies of four others were washed away. In- formation of the casualty reached Alde- burgh at about 10.30 P.M , and the No. 2 Life-boat Edward Z. Dresden was launched, as it was thought possible that some of the men might be found clinging to the boat. The Life-boat searched for some hours without finding any of the bodies; she, however, fell in with the capsized boat, which she took to Aldeburgh, where they arrived at 8.30 A.M. The Life-boat was towed back by H.M.S. NitJi, which had also • proceeded to the scene of the accident I for the purpose of rendering assistance..
