Cromdale

During a dense fog on the 23rd May the ship Cromdale, of Aberdeen, was wrecked at Beast Point. The vessel was a large one of 1,849 tons register, bound from Taltal to Plymouth with a cargo of nitrates. Information of the disaster reached Cadgwith at 9.45 P.M.

and the Lizard a few minutes later.

With commendable promptitude the Life-boats Minnie Moon and Admiral Sir George Back proceeded to the vessel.

The Minnie Moon, from Cadgwith, was the first boat to reach the ship, and the crew, who had taken to their boats, were at once rescued. The captain then asked that he and some of the crew might be replaced on board for the purpose of saving some of their belongings. Five men. were accordingly put on board, but the ship suddenly began to sink by the stern and the men had barely time to rush for the rigging when the decks became awash.

Fortunately the Lizard Life-boat was close at hand and was able to save the five men. One of the crew after- wards" said to the Honorary Secretary : " We were properly scared, sir, when we felt the ship settling down, and had not your Life-boat appeared in the nick of time we had all agreed to jump for it and trust to being picked up again, for the other boats had disappeared into the fog by that time, and the Lizard Life-beat was the only one we could see.

I never felt so thankful in my life as I did when the Life-boat appeared." The Cromdale became a total wreck, but fortunately the whole of her crew, twenty-five in number, were saved..
