Sidney Smith
.—-The Schooner Sidney Smith, of Portmadoc, whilst bound from Spain to Bristol with a cargo of iron ore, stranded at the mouth of Bantham Harbour, in foggy weather, early in the morning of the 25th March. Information of the disaster was conveyed to the Coxswain of the Life-boat Alexandra by the Coastguard at 2.45 A.M., and, as quickly as possible, the Life-boat was sent to the vessel's assistance. A strong W.S.W. wind was blowing with a heavy sea and when the Life-boat reached the schooner the seas were breaking right over her.
Only two men were then on board, four others having been rescued by the life- saving apparatus shortly before the arrival of the boat. The two men were taken off and the boat returned to her station..
