The sprit-sail barge Monarch, of London, whilst bound from London to Yarmouth, got into difficulties when off Harwich on the 6th January, owing to her steering gear getting out of order. In response to her distress signals, which were re- ported by the Coastguard to the Life- boat Coxswain, the No. 1 Life-boat Ann Fawcett, was launched. On reaching the vessel the Life-boatmen were en- gaged to salve her and successfully brought her into the fiarbour. There was a rough sea at the time with a moderate gale blowing..
