Betsy and Meggie

On the morning of the 24th August, the weather being fine, the fishing fleet put to sea, but the S.S.E. wind freshened and caused the sea on the bar to rise, until about 10 A.M., when it had become so heavy that it was considered unsafe for the small boats not already in harbour to attempt to cross the bar. At 10.45 A.M. the Life- boat Sarah Jane Turner was launched and proceeded to sea, the boats Betsy and Meggie being in danger. The six men forming the crews were asked if they would come into the Life-boat, but they preferred to remain on board their boats, asking the Life-boat to keep close to them over the bar in case of disaster. The boat did so accordingly, and was able to return to her house at 12.30 P.M..
