On the 8th January one of the crew of the ketch Leader, of Bideford, went mad whilst the vessel was lying at anchor in St. Tudwells roads. The master of the ketch, having locked the man in his cabin, came ashore for assistance, but the man managed to escape and was seen running about the deck; the master therefore was obliged to return. By this time the wind, which was northerly, increased to a gale, and it was not pos- sible to do anything further in the ship's boat, signals of distress were therefore made from the vessel and the Life-boat Oldham was launched.
