Lugano
— On the 26th April a vessel was observed on fire off Hastings, and the Life-boat Charles Arkoll was launched to render assistance if necessary. The vessel proved to be the steamer Lugano of Hamburg, home- ward bound from Baltimore with a general cargo. The fire was discovered when they were off Beachy Head, and on the arrival of the Life-boat soon after 1 P.M. active steps were being taken by those on board to extinguish the flames.
The Life-boatmen gave what help they could and the boat stood by the burning steamer until six o'clock the next morn- ing, when the tugs with the vessel being sufficient protection, the Life-boat re- turned ashore..
