The Spittal Private Salvage Boat Margaret Dadds

About 7 A.M. on the 4th January, a fog-horn was heard to the southward by the fishermen and they at once assem- bled to man the Life-boat. Confirmation by the Coastguard was received that a steamer was in distress and the Life-boat Matthew Simpson was therefore launched and proceeded to sea. About half a mile from the pier-end they observed the Spittal private salvage boat Margaret D ,dds, which was also used on occasions for life-saving, making very urgent signals to them. It was noticed that she was very deep in the water, and on getting alongside, she was found to be sinking, the gunwale being already awash.

The men were baling with their hats, and every endeavour was being made to keep her afloat until help reached them.

The crew of fifteen were taken into the Life-boat, which then returned and landed them in safety at Spittal. The Life-boat then proceeded to the steamer but her assistance was not required..
