Several of the fishing cobles put to sea in the early morning of the 6th January, but soon after 7 A.M. the wind veered to N.E. and increased to a strong gale. Ten of the cobles were sufficiently near home to gain a shelter, but three were overtaken by the boisterous weather. As their return was attended bj considerable danger, the Life-boat Eollon ilie Second was launched and stood by the three boats until they reached the shore..
