During a, strong W.N.W. gale with heavy sea on the 28th January the schooner Helen Hutcliesou, of Peterhead, at anchor in the Roadstead, showed signals of distress after an unsuccessful attempt by the vessel's crew to land in their own boat, which they were obliged to abandon on account of the gale and heavy swell.

The Life-boat Co-operator No. 3 was launched and proceeded to the schooner which was dragging her anchors and rescued the three men on board. The vessel was bound at the time for Belfast with a cargo of paving stones..
