NEWHAVEN, SUSSEX.—On the 29th March the Coxswain of the Life-boat Michael Henry was called at 3.50 A.M.

by the harbour watchman, who reported that a vessel was in distress at the mouth of the harbour. The Life-boat was launched and proceeded to the vessel, which proved to be the ketch Progress, of Brixham, aground on the bar. On the master being asked if he required assistance, he requested the Life-boat to stand by him to see if the vessel would float with the rising tide.

This they did, and when the ketch got clear both she and the Life-boat proceeded to the harbour. The wind was blowing a moderate gale from S.W., with a heavy sea, and the weather was very cold and thick, with rain..
