Shore-Boat Services Rewarded By the Royal National Life-Boat Institution In 1898

Jan. 13.—Voted 22. each to the fonr sur- vivors of the crew of the Margate beachmon's surf boat Friend of aU Nations, which was capsized, with, the loss of nine of her crew while on her way to a distressed vessel on the 2nd December last.

Also 51. to twenty men for rendering help to four of the crew of the Martha Ellen, of Goole, which stranded at Blakeney, Norfolk, in a whole gale from N.W. and a very heavy sea on the 29th November. The sum of 15s. was also granted to the owner of a boat which was damaged on the occasion.

Also 42. 15s. to the master and crew of the lugger Love Lane, of Wexford, for endeavour- ing to rescue those on board the schooner Margaret, of Beaumaris, which they had observed stranded on the Blackwater Bank, on the 3rd December. Finding they were unable to effect communication with the wreck, they attracted the attention of those on shore, and a coastguard boat put off and rescued the ship- wrecked men.

Also 3Z. 15«. to six men for rescuing four men from a boat belonging to the s.s. Heligoland, of Hamburg, which was unable to regain the vessel, in Carmarthen Bay, in a fresh 8. gale and a very heavy sea on the 14th December.

The men were greatly exhausted, the boat was half full of water and had lost her mast.

Also 32. to six men for rendering assistance to four of the crew of the Norwegian barque Fram, who had taken to one of their boats, the vessel having stranded near Auchmithie, Forfarehire, on the 26th December.

Also 22. 12«. Sd. to five persons for rescuing one of three men from a fishing boat, which had been capsized off Isle Martin, Cromarty, in a strong N.N.W. breeze, a rough sea and thick weather, on the 17th September.

Also 21. to two men for wading into the surf and rescuing one of the crew of the brig Pen- nine, of Newhaven, which had stranded at Palling, Norfolk, in a whole gale from N.N.W.

and a very heavy sea on the 29th November.

Also II. 10s. to three fishermen of Filey, Yorkshire, for rescuing nine men from the boat of the stranded s.s. Centaur, of Grimaby, in a strong 8. gale and a rough sea, on the 13th December.

Also II. to two men for rescuing a man whose boat had struck on a rock, and sunk between the Mewstoue and the mainland in a strong N.E, breeze and a heavy sea, on the 1st November.

Jan. 13.—A man rescued the boat Mischief, of Peppercombe, Devon, containing two men, which was helplessly drifting out to sea in Barnstaple Bay, in a fresh S.E. breeze and a moderate sea.—Reward, 10s.

Feb. 8.—Six men rescued three other men from a boat which had been capsized by a heavy sea near the entrance to Portrush har- bour, eo. Antrim.—Keward, 21. 5s.

Feb. 10.—Voted 41. 15s. to six men for putting off in a yawl and rescuing the master of the schooner Hilda, of Bridgwater, which had stranded and sunk close under the cliff at Dnncannon Fort, Ireland, in a strong S.S.W.

gale, a high sea, aud thick weather on the 27th December. The crew of the vessel had landed in their own boat to obtain assistance, but were unable to return to their vessel.

Also II. 15s. to seven men for putting off in a boat with the view of rescuing two men on board the schooner Margaret, of Beaumnris, stranded on the Blackwater Bank, Ireland, in a S.W. wind and a moderate sea oa the 3rd December. The two men were rescued by a coastguard boat.

Feb. 12.—Nine men saved the fishing boats Mary and Ann Alexandrina, of Montrose, and their crews of six men, which were in danger while returning to port in a strong S.S.W. gale and a very heavy sea.—Reward, SI. 7s. 6d.

Feb. 12.—Nine fishermen rescued four other fishermen who were unable to return to Cro- marty, a fresh gale having sprung up, accom- panied by a heavy sea.—Reward, 42. lOc.

Feb. 25.—Five men rescued the crew of three men from the schooner Grace Phillips, of Carnarvon, which had stranded off Holyhead, in a W.N.W. gale, and a moderate sea.—Reward, 32. 15s.

March 7.—Eight men saved a fishing boat and her crew of four men, which had been capsized at Enockadoon, co. Cork, in a moderate E.S.E. gale and a rough sea.—Re- ward, 42.

March 18.—Seven fishermen rendered ser- vice on the occasion of the capsizing of the fishing yawl Britannia, of Dundee, near Kings- barns, Fifeshire, in a strong 8.W. gale and a rough sea.—Reward, 12. 5s.

April 6.—Two men rescued the crew of two men of a boat capsized off Trefri Point, Merion- ethshire, in a rough sea.—Reward, 15».

April 6.—A crew manned the Institution's boarding boat at New Brighton and stood by the smack Frederica, of Liverpool, which stranded on the Burbo Bank in a strong W.

breeze, a rough sea, and hazy weather.—Re- ward, 92.5s.

April 7.—Voted 251. in aid of the fund raised locally for the widow and family of a man who lost his life in an endeavour to assist the crew of the private Life-boat Seagull, of Bridlington, who were in considerable peril, the boat being dashed against the sea wall and entirely destroyed when about to proceed to sea on service in a strong E.N.E. gale and a very heavy sea on the 25th March.

April 20.—Two men saved two men from a capsized boat belonging to the yacht Marie, of Hoylake, in a smooth sea.—Reward, 10s.

May 15.—Three men put off in a boat and saved two men from the boat Edith, of Carap- beltown, which had been capsized off Peninver, Argyllshire—Reward, 15*.

July 9.—Two men put oft in a boat and saved one of two men whose boat had been cap-sized in broken water in Durlston Bay, Dorset, in a light E. breeze.—Reward, 10«.

2s. Gil. was also granted to the man who gave the first intimation of the capsizing of the boat.

July 14.—Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, to EVAN ROBERTS, an aneroid barometer to HUGH EVANS and ROBEBT JOHN HUGHES, and 11. to W ALTER JONES for their very praiseworthy services in saving life from several boats in danger at Rhos-on-Sea, on the 3rd June. A framed vellum recording the services of their late son was presented to the parents of Mr. EDWARD MORGAN, who unfortu- nately lost his own life in endeavouring to rescue others from drowning on this occasion.

July 24.—Two men rescued one of three men from a boat which had been capsized in New- biggin Bay, in a moderate N.E. breeze and a heavy ground swell.—Eeward II.

Aug. 1.—A man assisted to save five per- sons (two of whom died soon after being rescued) from a boat which had been capsized off Campbeltown, in squally weather.—Ee- ward, II.

Aug. 9.—Two men rescued two men from a sailing-beat which, while returning from the Skerries to Cemlyn, Anglesey, in a strong S.W. breeze and a heavy ground swell, became impaled on an old wreck, about a mile E. of Oarmel's point.—Reward. 15«.

Aug. 27.—Three men rescued four of the crew of the schooner BSskilde, of Roskilde, Denmark, which was capsized in a squall off Kinghorn, Fifeshire.—Reward, 31.

Sept. 18.—Two men put off in a boat and rescued a pleasure boat, containing two men.

Oct. 13.—Voted the thanks of the Institu- tion, inscribed on vellum and framed, to Mr.

GEORGE E. WAOE, for saving life under the following circumstances:—While three boats were racing at Aberdovey, on the 23rd August, one of them carried away her mast and drifted into the breakers on the bar, where she was completely filled. Her two occupants were thrown into the water, but were able to cling to the boat." Major Danka and John Price, boatman, who were in a small fishing boat, dropped their anchor to enable them to take down their sail prior to rowing to the rescue, but the anchor dragged, their boat was filled, and Price unfor- tunately lost his life. Major Danks retained hold of the sprit and was rescued by Mr. Wace, who was in one of the competing boats, and proceeded to his assistance after having saved the occupants (one of whom was his son) of the other swamped boat. The third competing boat went up the river and obtained the assist- ance of the fishing boat Cetetcayo, which sailed down the estuary and took them into the harbour.

Voted 501. to the widow and daughter of John Price, who thus lost his own life in a noble endeavour to save others. He had been a member of the crew of the Aberdovey Life- boat for forty years.

Oct. 16.—Six men put off in a boat from Groomsport, Co. Down, and rescued the Master of the s.s. Dalriada, which stranded on Briggs' Reef, in a strong E. wind. The crew had already been rescued by the Life- boat, but the Master then declined to leave the vessel.—Eeward, 11. 10s.

The sum of 17s. Gd. was awarded to seven men who rendered assistance, and lOg. was granted to the owner of the boat used on the occasion.

Oct. 18.—Five men rescued, by means of lines, one of the crew of the barque Birger, of Eanma, which was totally wrecked off Eedcar.—Eeward, 11. lie. Gd.

Nov. 3.—Two pilots put off in a boat from the steam-tug Mabd, and rescued one of the crew of the barquentine Angot, of Ohristiania, which had stranded in the Burry Inlet, Car- marthenshire, in a strong W.N.W. breeze and a heavy sea. The remainder of the vessel's crew, who had taken to their boat, succeeded in getting back to the ship, Which afterwards drove across the channel, and went aground on the mainland.—Reward, II.

Deo. 8.—Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum and framed, with the sum of 11. each, to ANGUS MACLEAN, DUNCAN MAC- ALPINE, and TUKNBB MACALISTER, seamen of the steam yacht Iris, for lowering a small boat from that vessel and gallantly proceeding in it to the assistance of the caretaker on board the steam yacht Bertie, of Greenock, whom they rescued. The vessel was being filled by heavy seas, and ultimately sunk at her moorings in Gourock Bay, Et-nt'rewshire, in a strong gale from E.N.E., and a very heavy sea, on the 17th October..
