The Maggie M. Birnie

PETERHEAD.—On the evening of the 28th April the wind increased to a gale, from E.S.E. and a heavy sea sprung up.

As some fishing-boats were expected to arrive from Shetland, and the approach to the harbour was dangerous, it was decided to launch the Life-boat George Pickard into the harbour, so as to beimmediately available should her services be required. A watch was kept by the crew, half of them being on duty the first part of the night and the others relieving them. About 9 o'clock on the following morning the Maggie M. Birnie was observed, and the Lift-boat at once proceeded to meet her and stood by her until she was towed into the harbour by the steam-tug..
