Prince Consort

PALLING, NORFOLK. — On the 6th January, 1898, the coxswain of the Life-boat Hearts of Oak was informed that flares had been shown in the direction of the Middle Happisburgh Sand.

The crew of the Life-boat were at once summoned, the boat was launched at 1.50 A M., and on reaching the spot foiund the brig Prince Consort, of Faversham, bound for Cowes from the Tyne, with a cargo of coal, ashore and leaking badly. The master engaged the services of the Lifeboat men to get the vessel afloat, and after working at the pumps for some time they succeeded in getting her off and took her into Yarmouth harbour at 6 P.M. A moderate W.S.W. breeze was blowing at the time these services were rendered, and there was a rough sea. The brig had a crew of eight men..
