The Steamers Sent and Kirkstall
GORLESTON. — On the 1st January, 1895, the steamers Sent, of London, and Kirkstall, of Shields, which had been detained in the roadstead by stress of weather, ran short of provisions and each sent a boat ashore to obtain supplies. A moderate gale was blowing, the sea was very rough and the weather very cold, with snow. When some distance from the vessels a heavy squall caught the boais, one of which lost two of her oars, while the other boat was half filled by a heavy sea. The Life-boat Mark Lane put off to their assistance, succeeded in reaching them before they drifted into thebreakers, and with the help of a steamtug, which also came to the rescue, the boats, in one of which were five men and in the other four, were brought safely into the harbour..
