The object of this Institution, if declared in Its title and In its Charter of Incorporation, Is to afford assistance to every shipwreclted person around the Coasts of the United Kingdom.

The chief means by wbich the Society endeavours to carry this oVJect tev effect are:— By building, stationing, and maintaining in repair. Life-boats of the most perfect description i furnishing them wlrti all necessary Appurtenances, including Houses to preserve tbem in, and Carriages for tiieir conveyance to the spots wVie thelv Services are called for; and further, providing, through Uie instrumentality ot Local Committees, for their proper Management and tbe occasional Exercise of their Crews.

By conferring Honorary Eewards in the form of Medals and Votes of Thanks, and also maklmc liberal grants of money to &U persons who, at tfce risk of their own lives, save, or a'tempt to save those of others on board vessels Wecked, or in distress, upon any part of the Coast of the United Kingdom.

The number of lives saved either by the Life-boats of tbe Institution, or by special exertions for which it hM granted rewards, since its formation, is 38,645.
