Shore-Boat Services Rewarded By the Royal National Life-Boat Institution In 1893
Jan. 11.—Five men waded into the sea and saved the crew of three men from a fishing boat which had been capsized in a surf at Shering- ham, Norfolk—Reward, 11. 5s.
Jan. 11.—Four men put off in a boat and saved one of two men from a small fishing boat, the Concordia, of Trimingham, Norfolk, which had been capsized midway between Trimingham and Mundesley in a strong N.
breeze, and a very rough sea.—Keward, tii.
Jan. 12.—Voted 24J. to twenty-four men for putting off in three boats from Stroma, Caith- ness-shire, and saving the crew of five men from the schooner Mary, of Montrose, which had stranded at Stroma, in a moderate S.W.
gale and a heavy sea, on the night of the 16th December.
Also 61. to twelve men for saving the crew of three men from a pilot boat which had been capsized off Drogheda, co. Louth, in a strong W. breeze and squally weather, on the 15th December.
Also 21. to two men for putting off twice in a boat and saving three men from a rowing boat which had been capsized off Kinghorn, Fife- shire, in a moderate gale and a heayy sea, on the 27th November.
Jan. 16. — Five Coastguardmen and two civilians put off in a boat belonging to the Leestone, co. Down, Coastguard Station, and saved a boat, containing two men, which was in danger off Leestone in a moderate gale.— Keward, 51. 5s.
Jan. 27.—Seven men put off in a boat and rendered assistance to the crew of the steamer Elizabeth, at Holy Island, Northumberland.— 1 Reward, II. 5t.
Feb. 2.—Three men saved a man whose boat having been stove in by collision with a barge had sunk off Deal in a moderate gale and a rough sea.—Reward, 15s.
Feb. 9.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Insti- tution, and the sum of 2Z. 5s. to Mr. WILLIAM ROBERT KELLAND, Trinity Pilot, and 2Z. 5s. to another Pilot who accompanied him, for their gallant services in putting off in their cutter's boarding boat with a view of saving five men from a boat which had been seriously damaged by collision with the cutter on the night of the 14th of January. A pilot who was in the injured boat was taken into the cutter by means of a rope, but nothing 'could be seen of the other men.
Also SI. 10s. to seven men for saving the crew of eight men of the brig Trio, of Ribb'r, Norway, which had struck on the Crow Rock and sunk in Dursey Sound, co. Cork, in a moderate S.B. gale and a ruugh sea on the 25th of December.

CHABLES S. COOKE, EDWAUD BOWLEB, and FBANK BOWLER, for their timely services to a boat with four persons on board which was in need of assistance in Douglas Bay, Isle of Man, on the 8th of September. The three gentlemen were in a boat fishing, and observing that the occupants, two ladies and two gentle- men, of the rowing boat, required help, pro- ceeded towards them and took their boat in tow to the shore.
Feb. 11.—The master and crew of the steam- tug Vixen saved two persons from a boat which had been capsized off Lytham, Lancashire, in a moderate N.W. gale.—Reward, II. 10s.
Feb. 19.—A man saved another man who had fallen overboard from a boat belonging; to the Norwegian barque Lovehjerte, at Exmouth, Devon, in a moderate S.W. gale and a rough sea.—Reward, 10s.
Feb. 20.—Seven men saved the crew of four men from the pilot-boat St. Patrick, which had been capsized off Drogheda, co. Louth, in a moderate breeze and a heavv sea.—Reward, 51. 5s.
March 2.—Two men saved two men fi oin a boat which had been capsized at Plymouth in a moderate breeze and a smooth sea.—Reward, 10s.
March 9.—Voted the Silver Medal and 11.
each to WILLIAM ROBINS, EDWIN ROBINS, GEORGE BISHOP and FREDERICK PERRIKG for putting off inabiat and gallantly saving the master and the owner of the Dieu Protege, of Lanniou, who, on the 14th February, were endeavouring to enter Par Harbour in their boat in a very heavy sea and a gale from the W.S.W. The boat was capsized, and her two occupants swam to a buoy to which they clung until rescued, at great risk, by the four salvors.

Donegal, and 11. 10s. each to four Coastguardmen for putting off in the station's life-whale-boat and saving the crew of three men from the ketch Catherine Roberts, of Chester, which stranded in Downing's Bay in a whole gale and a very heavy sea on the 10th Februiiry.
March 15.—Five pilots rendered assistance to the crew of five men of the schooner Gazelle, of Inverness, who had taken to their boat, the vessel having stranded on Scotston Head Reef, off Aberdeenohire, in a strong N.W. gale and a rough sea.—Reward, 11. 17s. (id.
March 17.—The crew, seven in number, of the pilot cutter Cynthia, saved four of the crew of the s.s. Darenth, of London, which had been run ashore on the Guufleet Sauds, having been damaged by collision, in a strong W.N.W.
wind and a moderate sea.—Reward, SI. 10s.
March 21.—Three men saved ten of the crew of the s.s. Fenella, of London, which had been in collision with the south pier at Tynemouth, and afterwards capsized, in a S. wind and a smooth sta.—Reward, 11. 10s.

March 28.—Two men saved one of two men whose boat had been capsized outside Dun- drum Bar in a heavy sea.—Reward, II.
April 13.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institution, accompanied by a copy of the vote, inscribed on vellum, to Mr. RICHARD KEANE, Station Officer of H.M. Coastguard at Helen's Bay, co. Down, and II. each to five other men, for putting off in a shore-boat at considerable risk, the boat being capsized several times, and saving the crew of three men from the schooner Clans, of Chester, which stranded in Helen's Bay in a strong gale from the E.N.E. and a very heavy sea on the 26th February.
Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, witli the sum of II, to EDWARD JONES and II. each to six other men, for savin?, at great risk, four of five men from a boat which had been capsized off Malinbeg, co. Donegal, in a strong S.W. breeze and a very heavy sea on the 1st March.
Voted 11. to Mr. ANGUS KERR, Assistant Keeper of Little Cumbrae Lighthouse, in the Firth of Clyde, for assisting to rescue Mr.
James Wallace, the Principal Keeper of the Lighthouse, who was returning to the island in a boat, having with him four of his children, when the boat was capsized by a sudden furious gust of wind The accident was observed by the Assistant Keeper who at once got out a boat and, accompanied by Wallace's wife and daughter, put off to the rescue and saved him ; the four children unhappily perished. The Committee expressed their deep sympathy with the parents and sister of the children.
June 8.—Voted the Silver Medal of the In- stitution, accompanied by a copy of the vote, inscribed on vellum, and the sum of II., to Lance-Corporal HOLMES, Rifle Brigade; to Private SUTCLIITE, 21st Hussars; and to Private BYRNE and Private CAEBOLL, Royal Irish Regiment, for gallantly putting off in a boat and saving three men whose boat had been capsized in Southampton Water ou the evening of the 1st May. The four soldiers were patients at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, having been invalided from India, and incurred very great risk of further injury to health by exposure in wet clothing to a cold wind, in addition to the danger they ran in effecting the rescue, having but small know- ledge of the management of a boat.
June 27.—Five coastguard men of Clacton- on-Sea put off in the coastguard galley and saved the crew of two men from the barge Robert and Jane, of Rochester, which sunk about half a mile S. of Clacton pier in a strong S.S.W.

July 1.—Two men saved the crew of three men from the yacht Eider, of South Shields, which was capsized about a mile and a half from the mouth of the Tyne in a moderate S.E. breeze and a rough, sea.—Reward, 11.
July 8.—The boat Shannon was caught in a squall and swamped while on a pleasure sail off Skegness, Lincolnshire, with thirty-one persons on board, twenty-eight of whom un- happily lost their lives. The other three per- sons were saved by a man in a fishing boat, and the crew* of five other boats rendered assistance in recovering some of the bodies of those who were drowned.—Reward, 61. 10«.
July 23.—Three men saved the crew of four men from the galley Susan, of Deal, which was sinking off the South Foreland in a strong breeze and a rough sea —Reward, 11.10s.
August 8.—Three men put off in a boat and saved five persons whose boat had struck on rocks at the West Sc-ar Head, Redcar, York- shire, and was knocked to pieces in squally weather.—Reward, 11.
August 20.—Two men saved the crew of three men from the fishing smack Margaret, of Swansea, which foundered off Skokholm Island, Pembrokeshire, in a moderate S.S.W.
gale and a heavy cross sea.—Reward, 11. 10s.
August 21.—Two men saved four men from a boat which bad been capsized in Youghal Harbour, co. Cork, in a strong W. breeze and a smooth sea.—Reward, 10s.
August 24.—Five men of the Royal Artillery saved a boat, containing one man, which WHS in danger about a mile and a half East of New- haven harbour in a strong W. wind and a heavy broken sea.—Reward, SI 15s.
Also 14s. to pay for two oars broken in rendering this service.
August 25.—Three men put off in a boat and saved one of three men from a pilot boat which had been capsized near Southwick, Sussex, in a N.W. wind and a moderate sea.—Reward, 11. 10s.
August 27.—Four men put off in a boat and rendered assistance to six persons who were in danger in another boat on the Salt Scarr rocks, Redcar, Yorkshire, in a rou h sea—Reward, 11.
Sept. 14.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institution, a framed copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, and the sum of 11. to THOMAS V AB- LE?, a miner of Marsden Colliery, Durham, for gallantly putting off in a rowing-boat, measuring only eight feet over all, and, at great risk, saving two men from the pilot coble folly, of South Shields, which had been cap- sized in a squall during a whole gale from the W.S.W. with a rough choppy sea, near Marsden Bay, on the 21st August.
Sept. 19.—Eight men put off in two boats and landed the crew of four men of a Coast- guard whale-boat belonging to Ross's point, co.

Nov. 18.—Six men put off to the assistance of the s.g. Ivanhoe, stranded under Orme's Head in a whole gale from the N. and a rough sea.

Nov. 20.—Ten men saved by means of lines from the shore the crew of eight men from the barque Vizcaya, of Littlehampton, which had stranded at Horsey, Norfolk, in a whole N.E.

Nov. 20.—A man waded into the surf and saved the only survivor of the crew of the barquentine Olive hranch, of Bridport, which was wrecked at Saltfleet in a whole gale and a very heavy sea.—Reward, 15«.
Nov. 20.—Fifteen men put off in the surf boat Friendi and saved three of the crew of the schooner Hickman, of Goole, which stranded and sank on Wells Bar, Norfolk, in a very strong E.N.B. gale and a very heavy sea. The salvors afterwards returned to the wreck and brought ashore the body of one of the crew who had died in the rigging.—Reward, 331. 15s.
Nov. 22.—Eight men put off in a boat and saved the crew of three men from the Peace and Plenty, of Montrose, stranded at Black Law Point in a strong N. gale and a rough, sea.

Coastguard, and 31. each to four other Coast- guard men of Sandwich station, for putting off in the Coastguard gig to the assistance of the stranded ketch Mclipse, of Ramsgate, in a whole gale from N. and a very heavy sea on the night of the 18th November. They were unable, owing to the gale, to reach the vessel, finally lost sight of her and returned ashore. At daylight she wns seen again; they at once put off, and witli much difficulty and danger rescued the only man on board.

Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, and 11. to RICHARD WHITTABER, a Coastguard man at Saltburn, and 11. each to four other men for saving the crew of four men from the schooner Bertha, of Leer, Germany, which stranded in Skinningrove Bay, Yorkshire, on the 20th November. WHITTAKER, observing the vessel, borrowed a coble, called for volun- teers, the other four men responding to his call, and brought ashore the crew; the master of the vessel refused to leave, but was after- wards landed by the rocket apparatus.
