Whinlather
NEWHAVEN.—The Coxswain of the Lifeboat Michael Henry was informed on the morning of the 12th January that a large ship was ashore at Portobello. He atonce summoned the crew, and at 8.45 the Life-boat was launched. On reaching the vessel she was found to be the barque Whinlather, of Liverpool, bound from London for Santiago with a general cargo.
She had stranded during a dense fog at 3 A.M., which had cleared just before she was observed from the shore, but she had sustained no damage. At the request of the master the Life-boat remained by the vessel until the arrival of a steam-tug, which towed her off, and took her to Southampton..
