Signals of distress were shown by the barque Mitford, of and for Newcastle, from Goole in ballast, during a strong N.E, gale and a heavy sea on the 3rd February. The Life-boat Manchester Unity was launched at 10.30 P.M., but the vessel stranded about a mile and a half above Grimsby, before the boat reached her. The Life-boat grounded near the barque, remained there during the night, and brought the master and his son ashore on the following morning, the remainder of the crew staying on board the vessel..
