Shore-Boat Services Rewarded By the Royal National Life-Boat Institution In 1886

Jan. 7.—Voted 61. to six men, for saving the crew, consisting of eight men, of the brigantine Pathfinder, of Digby, N.S., who had taken refuge on Tor Rock, about a mile N.W. of Innia- trahull Light, off the coast of Donegal, their vessel having struck the rock and sunk in a few minutes, at about 2 o'clock on the morning of the 11th November.

Also 21. to two men, for rescuing the master of the s.s. Stainsacre, t f Whitby, which had been in collision with another steamer, and sunk near the entrance to the Tyne, on the night of the 30th November.

Also 21. to two men, for saving the crew of three men of the schooner J. E. Furlong, of Dublin, which stranded on the North Bull, and became a total wreck, during a strong S.W.

gale on the night of the 3rd December.

Also '21. to two lighthouse-keepers at Scurdy Ness Lighthouse, for rescuing, at some risk, the crew of three men and the master's wife from the schooner Expert, of Montrose, which was wrecked at Scurdy Ness, at 2.40 A.M. on the 6th December.

Also 11. 10». to three men, for saving, at some risk, a man from a boat which had been capsized, at the mouth of the Tees, by a heavy sea, during a moderate breeze from the W.S.W., on the 11th December.

Jan. 13.—The crew of the steam-tug Tele- phone of Exmouth, rescued five fishing-boats, and their crews, consisting of twenty men, which had been overtaken by a gale.—Reward, 51. 108.

Jan. 21.—Seven men put off in a boat and rescued one out of four men from a yawl which had capsized while rounding the Hook Light, co. Wexford, during squally weather.—Reward, 31. Ws. 3Z. was also granted to two light- keepers and a ploughman who conveyed in- formation of the casualty and materially con- tributed to the rescue of the drowning man.

Jan. 31.—The master and crew of the steam- tug Gamecock saved the crew of four men of the Marie Katherine, of Bangor, who had taken to their boat, their vessel having been wrecked on the North Goodwin Sands during a S.8.W. wind.

Feb. 4,—Voted the Silver Medal of the Insti- tution, a copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, and 11. to RICHARD EGBERTS, Second Coxswain of the Llanddulas Life-boat, for wading into a heavy sea at great risk, and helping to save by means of ropes the crew, consisting of two men, of the flat Dido, of Runcorn, which stranded at Penmaen-rhos, near Llanddulas, during a strong gale, and a very heavy sea on the 8th January.

Also 13Z. to thirteen other men who assisted to accomplish the rescue.

Also 4:1. to four men for putting off in a small boat at moderate risk, and rescuing the crew of two men from the smack Alexander Mackenzie, of Brora, Sutherland, which had stranded off Dornock, during a strong S.W. breeze on the 12th December.

Also 21. 10s. to five men for putting off in a boat from Watchet, Somersetshire, and rescuing the crew of three men of the sloop Lass, of Minehead, which was totally wrecked at Warren to the westward of Watchet during a gale and a heavy sea on the 12th August.

Feb. 11.—Five men put off in a boat and saved three men, whose boat had drifted to a rock, and was rapidly sinking, in the middle of the Sound between Eriskay and South Uist, during a gale of wind.—Reward, 21. 10s.

Feb. 18.—Three fishermen put off in a boat and saved the crew of three men from the fishing- boat O. Ker, of Wexford, which had struck on a rock and sunk in Wexford Harbour, during a strong S. breeze.—Reward, 11. 10s.

Feb. 23.—Three men put off in a boat at great risk, and rescued two men from a pilot boat which had been capsized by a heavy sea off South Shields at 11 o'clock at night.—Reward, 3J. 15s.

March 1.—Four men put off in a boat from Gorleston and rescued one of the crew of the trawler Adventure, who had been knocked over- board by the sail while making for Gorleston, during a moderate E. gale.—Reward, 11.

March 4.—Voted the thanks of the Institu- tion to Mr. ARTHUR E. WATTON and Mr. W. COATHE, and 5«. to a boatman, for putting off in a boat, and rescuing a man whose canoe had been capsized off Orme's Head during a squall on the 10th February.

March 8.—Three men rescued the master of the s.s. St. David, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, which stranded on Seafem Sea Rocks during a fresh S.S.E. wind,—Reward, 11. 2s. 6d.

March 17.—The pilot, master, and crew of the smack Ada rescued one of the crew of a pilot boat, which had been capsized off Teignmouth during a strong breeze from the S.E.—Reward, 31. 10s.

March 23.—The mate and fireman of the steam-tug Thomas Gollingdon, of Cardiff, put off in the steamer's punt and, at considerable risk, saved the wife of the master of the ketch General Gordon, of London, which had sunk after being hi collision with a barque about five miles N.W. of Hartland Point, Devonshire, during a strong breeze from the S.S.E., and a heavy ground sea.—Reward, 21. 10s. 11. 10s, was also granted to the master and engineer of the tug.

March 25.—Four men put off in a boat and rescued two men, whose boat had struck on a wreck and sunk in St. Margaret's Bay, Kent, during a fresh. S.W. wind and a rough sea.— Reward, 21.

March 30.—Five men put off in a small boat belonging to the Littlehaven Life-boat Station, and saved the crew of five men of the schooner Tern, of Faversham, which was in danger in St.

Bride's Bay, Pembrokeshire, during a moderate S.W. gale.—Reward, 51 April 3.—Six men put off in a boat, at con- siderable risk, and saved six men and a woman from the fishing-boat Ocean Chief, of Peterhead, which was in a very dangerous position near Eonas Voe, on the W. coast of Shetland, during rough weather.—Reward, 61.

April 7.—PETER McGivERN rescued four men from two boats, loaded with seaweed, which were swamped in Mill Bay during a strong S.S.W. gale.—Reward, 11. An additional 11. was granted to the salvor to cover the loss he sus- tained by throwing overboard his boat's load of seaweed in order to effect the rescue of the endangered men.

April 12.—Four men put off in a boat and saved two men from a fishing boat, which had been capsized oft Rosadohan, co. Kerry, during a moderate gale from the S.E.—Reward, 21.

April 23.—Three men rescued the crew of two men of the fishing hooker St. Patrick, which was struck by another vessel and foundered off Killeen Point, co. Galway, during a fresh E. breeze.—Reward, 11. 10s.

April 25.—Four men put off in a boat and assisted to save three persons from another boat which had been capsized by a squall off Innis- kera, co. Donegal. The rescuers afterwards saved the boat and her gear.—Reward, 11.

April 28.—Four men put off in a small boat, at great risk, and saved three of four men whose boat, laden with seaweed, had been capsized off Bush, co. Dublin, during a strong N.B. gale, at 7 P.M.—Reward, 4Z.

May 8.—Two men saved a boat, containing two boys, which was in danger close to the Scroby Sands during fine weather. No risk was incurred by the salvors, but they were obliged to abandon their fishing lines until the following day.—Reward, 11.

May 10.—Ten men gallantly put off in the galley punt Siloam from Deal beach at half- past eleven o'clock at night, and, at considerable risk, saved the crew, consisting of four men, of the schooner Samson, of Cowes, which had stranded on the Goodwin Sands in a heavy sea. —Reward, 101.

May 19.—Three men and a woman put off in a boat and saved three men, whose boat had been upset by a squall near Usinich Light- house, Inverness-shire.—Reward, 21.5s.

May 20.—Seven men rescued, at moderate risk, four men whose boat, laden with seaweed, had filled and capsized off Portrush Head, co. Antrim, during a fresh breeze from the N.N.E.— Reward, SI. 10s.

May 22.—Two men rescued a man and a boy who were clinging to the mast of their fishing boat which had sunk off Enniscrone, co. Sligo, during a moderate breeze from the 8.—Re- ward, 11.

May 29.—Two men rescued two men whose boat had been capsized off Winterton during a moderate breeze from the S.W.—Reward, 10s.

July 1.—Voted 751. in aid of a fund being raised by Sir THOMAS F. BRADY, Inspector of Irish Fisheries, for the relief of the families of three men who were unfortunately drowned by the capsizing of their curragh, having put off to the assistance of the crew of another curragh, which was in danger off the middle island of Arran, during squally weather and a heavy sea, on the 8th of April. The men had left sixteen persons totally unprovided for. The other boat and her three occupants succeeded in reaching the shore in safety.

July 9.—A man. put off in a small boat and rescued at great risk four boys, whose boat had capsized in Walney Channel, off Barrow in Fur- ness, during a strong breeze from the N.W.— Reward, 11.

July 12.—Two men put off in a boat and, at considerable risk, rescued three men from a fishing boat which had been capsized off Selsey, during a strong gale from the S.W.—Reward, 21.

July 19.—Four men saved two men from a pilot boat, which was capsized off Benhead, Co. Meath, during a moderate gale.—Reward, 21.

July 20.—Three fishermen of Groomsport, Ireland, saved a punt, containing two boys, which was drifting out to sea during a strong S.W. gale.—Reward, 15s.

July 21.—Two lads put off in a boat and rescued at some risk two of three boys whose boat had drifted out to sea and capsized off Holywood, co. Down, during rough weather.— Reward, 11.10s.

July 24.—Two men rescued, at considerable risk, a man from a fishing boat, which was sink- ing in Arran Roads, co. Donegal.—Reward, II. 10s.

July 25.—Five men put off in a boat and rescued five persons from the pleasure boat Sun- rise, of Bangor, which had lost her mast and was disabled off Groomsport, co. Down, during squally weather.—Reward, 11. 15s.

July 26.—Four men saved a boat and one man, the boat being half full of water and her occupant helpless and exhausted, between Bock Curachan and Bum Island, Western Hebrides, during a N. gale.—Reward, 31. 10s.

July 27.—Two men rescued two men from a foy boat, which had her rope broken while in tow of a steamer, throwing the men overboard, at the mouth of the Tyne, during a strong E.N.E. breeze.—Reward, II.

Aug. 2.—Pour met put off in two boats and rescued five of seven persons from a boat which had gone foul of a dredger's chains, and cap- sized and sunk off Fleetwood.—Reward, 21.

Sept. 9.—Five men put off in a boat and at great risk saved the crew of three men from the schooner Mersey, of Arbroath, which was in dis- tress off Golspie, Dornoch Firth, during a moderate gale from the S.W.—Reward, 31.

Sept. 9.—Four men put off in a boat and rescued a man from a fishing boat which was in danger near Bridges Beef, off co. Down, Ireland, during a strong S. gale.—Reward, 21.

Sept. 20.—JAMBS FRIEND (late sergeant in H.M. 44th Regiment, now keeper of two dis- used Martello towers at Bawdsey, who lost a foot and part of a leg in the Crimean War) put off in a boat, and, with much difficulty, rescued a young man who had gone out in a row-boat, had broken one of his oars, and was in a danger- ous position, being about six or seven miles from the shore, near sandbanks, and night coming on. —Reward, II Ws.

Oct. 14.—Five fishermen put off in the gig Columbo and saved five of the crew of the s.s. Indus, of Dundee, the men having taken to their boats on their vessel foundering off Trevose Head, Cornwall.—Reward, 21 10*.

Oct. 23.—Three men put off in a boat and saved three men from a sailing boat which had capsized off Worthing, during a strong S.E. breeze.—Reward, II. Ws.

Oct. 25.—The master and crew of the smack Cockatrice saved the crew of two men of a boat which had capsized near Paignton Sands, Devonshire, during a strong E. breeze.—Re- ward, 11. 15«.

Nov. 3.—Six men saved the fishing-boat Silver Spray and her crew of three men, which was in danger of sinking in Llandudno Bay during a moderate 8. gale.—Reward. 31.

Nov. 3.—Four men put off in a boat, at con- siderable risk, and saved three men whose boat had been filled by a heavy sea while they were getting their fishing nets in; one of their oars broke, and the boat was helplessly drifting out to sea in Rhog Bay, Carnarvonshire, during a moderate S. gale.—Reward, 21.

Nov. 3.—Two men, while returning ashore from fishing, at 9.30 A.M., observed another boat capsized by a squall. They immediately pro- ceeded to her assistance, and rescued the boat's crew, consisting of two men.—Reward, 11.

Dec. 2.—Voted 51. to the crew of the Eye- mouth Life-boat, for launching the boat with the view of assisting the wrecked s.s. Janet Duncan, of Dundee. The men found, however, that they were better able to render assistance from the shore, by means of heaving lines, &c., and thus helped to rescue three of the shipwrecked crew.The following is a copy of a Handbill circulated on the Coasts of the United Kingdom by the Institution, for the purpose of informing Boatmen and others that it encourages laudable exertions to save Life from Shipwrecks: — TO BOATMEN AND OTHERS To encourage prompt and energetic exertions in time of Danger on the part of Boatmen and Others, by quickly putting off to save Life in CASES of WRECKS on the Coasts of the British Isles, either by SHORE-BOATS OR OTHER. MEANS, fife-boat GRANTS Rewards of Money or Medals. In all cases the Rewards are given without further delay than is necessary to obtain proof of the merits of each case, and to ensure their being paid to the right parties.
