At midnight on the 8th of March the look-out man reported a vessel on shore.

A strong S.E. wind was blowing at the time and the sea was heavy. The Good Hope .was launched and proceeded to the vessel, which proved to be the brig Mat/en, of and from Shields, for London, with cargo of coal. The Life-boat remained by her several hours, but as she was rapidly filling with water, her crew, consisting of seven men, were taken into the Life-boat, and safely landed at Palling at 11.30 A.M. The vessel became a total wreck..
