Shore-Boat Services Rewarded By the Royal National Life-Boat Institution In 1885

Jan. 1.—Voted 5?. to the master and crew of the steam-tug Telephone, of Falmouth, for saving five fishing-luggers, some of their nets, and their crews, numbering twenty men, which were in much danger off Exmouth during a heavy gale from the N.N.W. on the 20th December.

Also the thanks of the Institution to Capt.

C. SQUIRE, Honorary Secretary of the Exmouth Branch, for his promptness in despatching the tug to the assistance of the endangered boats.

Jan. 23.—Twelve men rescued by means of two boats, the crew of five men of the Norwe- gian schooner Nordenfeld, wliich stranded on Craster Little Carr Rock, near Boulmer, North- umberland, during a moderate breeze from S. to SE., and thick weather.—Reward, 121.

Jan. 26.—Five men rescued the crew of two men of the gig Spring, of St. Ives, which, while returning from fishing, had been upset by a sudden squall in St. Ives Bay. With help of another boat's crew the capsized boat was towed ashore.—Reward, II. 5g.

Jan. 27.—Four men saved the crew consisting of five men from the boat of the steamer Ferifer, of Dundee, which struck on Bondicar Point in thick weather, and sank within a few minutes.

A further sum of 21.10s. was granted to the salvors, being the amount they would probably have earned by fishing which they lost by returning to Newbiggin with the rescued men.

Jan. 28.—Eleven men put off in a yawl, and saved the crew of three men from the schooner Geneva, of Carnarvon, which was in danger, outside the breakwater at Peel, Isle of Man, during a strong S.S.E. gale.—Eeward, 51. 10s.

Feb. 5.—Voted il. to eight men for putting off from Brixham, Devonshire, in the Coast- guard whale boat, and saving five of the crew of the s.s. Antonio Stathato, of Ithaca, whose boat was capsized while they were proceeding from their vessel to Brixham during a strong E.N.E. wind on the 21st December.

Is. extra was granted, in addition to one of the salvors who first observed the accident, and gave an alarm.

A further sum of 21. 10s. was at the same time awarded to five men who manned another boat, and also went to the rescue at some risk, their boat being a small one.

Also 61. 15s. to the crews of two boats for rescuing the fishing-coble Pioneer, of North Sunderland, and her crew of four men, which had her rudder broken, and was in danger during a gale of wind from the W. and a rough sea on the 19th December.

Also 5s. to a man for rescuing a fisherman who had fallen overboard from his boat, off Bucks, Devonshire, during a moderate breeze from the E. on the 18th November.

Feb. 10.—Six fishermen put off in a boat, and saved two persons from another boat which was in danger in Newport Bay, during a strong southerly wind.—Reward, 11. Is.

Feb. 12.—Six men rescued the crew of four men from the boat of the ketch James Walter, of Hull, which sunk on the Knaveatone Rock Fame Islands, during a S.W. wind.—Reward, 51. 5s.

Feb. 14.—Six men of Newburgh, Aberdeen- shire, rescued four boys from a boat which had been carried out to sea from the river Ytham.— Reward, ll. 10s.

Feb. 21.—Two men put off in a boat from a pilot cutter, and helped to rescue the crew of eight men of the brigantine Margaret Jane Swift of Faversham, which stranded off Poole, during a strong E. breeze and a rough sea.— Reward, 11.

Feb. 21.—Five men put off in a boat, and saved the crew of two men from the smack Eliza McDonald, of Wigtown, which was in distress in Port Yerrock Bay, Wigtownshire, during a gale from the S.S.E.—Reward, 21. 10s.

11. was also awarded to some men and boys who assisted to launch the boat, and 101. to a carter who was injured by the boat, and the cart on which it was being conveyed from Whithorn Harbour to Port Yerrook Bay being blown over.

Feb. 25.—-Three men put off in a boat, and saved the crew of two men of a lighter which had struck and sunk on the flats off Wexford, during a strong S.W. wind, and hazy weather.

March 5.—Voted 21. 5s. to three men for saving the lugger St. Fergus, of Stornoway, and her crew of tour men. The vessel had her sail blown away, and was in great danger off Barra, during a very strong N.W. wind on the 20th December.

March 6.—Two men rescued a man who had been thrown overboard from his boat by the jibing of the main boom in Wexford Harbour during a strong E.N.E. wind.—Reward, 11.

March 21.—Two men saved the lives of two other men, whose boat capsized off Tynemouth while entering the harbour during squally weather.—Reward, 11.

April 10.—ALEXANDER THOMSON rescued by means of ropes, at some risk of his life four of the crew of the fishing-boat Welfare, of Eye- mouth, which was totally wrecked on the rocks off that port during an E. by N. wind and misty weather. In rendering this service he had his watch much damaged and lost his coat.— Reward, 51.

April 24.—The Chief Officer of H.M. Coast- guard at Pemhrey, and four other Coastguard men put off in their boat and saved a man from the cutter Gazelle, of Swansea which was totally wrecked off Pembrey during a strong breeze from the S.E.—Reward, 21. 10s.

June 5.—Two men rescued three other men whose boat had capsized off Polperro, Cornwall, during a moderate S.W. breeze.—Reward, 10s.

June 18.—A sergeant and five other men of the Royal Artillery put off in a boat from Fort Norman, and saved five men whose boat had capsized off Southsea, during a strong S.W.

breeze and a rough sea.—Reward, 31.

June 29.—Five men put off in a boat, and saved three persons from a boat which had cap- sized in a squall off Ballinacourty, co. Water- ford, during a strong breeze from the W.N.W.

July 2.—Voted the thanks of the Institution and 11. each to ISAAQ SHORT, of Appledore, Devon, and his son, for putting off in a boat and saving, at some risk, three out of eiht men whose boat had sunk off Appledore, during a strong breeze from the W.N.W., on the 21st of June.

July 16.—Three Coastguardmen put off in a boat, at some risk, and saved eight persons from a pleasure boat, which had drifted on Peveril Ledge, and was in great danger, during a fresh S.W. breeze and a heavy cross sea.—Reward, II. 10s.

Aug. 2.—Four men and a woman rescued five persons from a boat which had capsized in Ballycotton Bay, during a moderate S.E. breeze.—Reward, 4Z.

Aug. 8.—Three men put off in a boat, at moderate risk, and saved two men from the fishing-boat Mary, of Port Ballantrae, which had been capsized in a squall off Carriek-a-rode Island, co. Antrim.—Reward, II. Ids.

Aug. 10.—Two men saved the crew of three men from the fishing coble Ocean Drift, of New- biggin, which was capsized off Church Point, Newbiggin, while proceeding to the assistance of some herring-boats which were riding in the bay, during a strong gale from the S.S.W.— Reward, 21.

Aug. 11.—Four men put off in a boat and saved three boys from an open boat off Yar- mouth, which was in danger near the Scroby Sand, during a fresh W. breeze and a rough sea.—Reward, II.

Aug 11.—A man put off in a punt from a boat at anchor in Pwllheli Harbour, and res- cued another man from a boat which had been capsized at the mouth of the harbour by a squall.—Reward, 5s. ; Aug. 13.—Four men put off twice in a boat, and, at some risk, saved six men from the fishing-boat Voyager, of Leith, which sunk at Horse Island, Shetland, during a strong gale from the N.N.E.—Reward 4Z.; 21. 10s. was also given to five men who went out in the boat on one occasion only.

Aug. 18.—Two men saved two other men whose boat had sunk off Lowestoft, during a stiff breeze from the N.E.—Reward, 11.

5s. was also granted to a man who also went to the rescue, but failed to save the men.

Sept. 12.—Six men put off in a coble and saved four men from a boat which had been struck by a heavy squall and sunk off Curran Point, Portrush.—Reward, SI.

Sept. 18.—Twenty-four Kingsdowne boatmen put off twice in two galleys, and assisted ashore two boats containing twenty-four per- sons from the steamer itolphin, of London, which had been in collision with another steamer, and sank off Walmer, during N.E.

wind, and a heavy cross sea.—Reward, 2il.

Sept. 19.—Four men put off in an open boat in tow of a steamer, and proceeded to the rescue of the schooner Margaret, of Ramsey, which was wrecked in Moss Bay, Cumberland, during a strong gale from the W.S.W. and a very heavy sea. The boat capsized, and ALEXANDER DON- NAN, one of the crew, was unfortunately drowned, leaving a widow, but no family. A reward of SI. was granted to the crew of the boat; 151.

was granted to the widow of the man who was drowned, and 4Z. 10s. to the crew of the tug.

The cost, amounting to 61.12s. 10d, of repair- ing the boat which was damaged was also defrayed by the Institution, and a reward of 21. was granted to the crew a tug from Harrington which proceeded to the rescue ; also 3Z. to six men who went out in the tug to man a steamer's Life-boat which she had in tow, but which was washed ashore on the tow-rope parting. The steamer was unable to get near enough to the vessel to rescue the only man then to be suen on the wreck.

Sept. 19.—Three men put off three times to the assistance of the schooner Zebra, of Carnar- von, which stranded at Ballyquintin Point, Co.

Down, during a fresh gale on the 19th of Sep- tember. On two occasions they were unable to reach the schooner, but on the third they suc- ceeded in rescuing the crew of four men.— Reward! SI.

Sept. 19.—Nine men of Hamnavoe, Shetland, put off in a fishing-boat and saved nine men from the fishing-boats Angler and JSate and Jane, which were in danger during a gale from the S.S.W.—Reward, 42. 10s.

Sept. 28.—A man rescued three men whose boat had been capsized off Clacton-ou-Sea, during a N wind.—Reward, 10s.

Oct. 1.—Vuted the thanks of the Institution inscribed on vellum to Mr. JAMES HANNA, Chief Officer of H. M. Coastguard at Bangor, co. Down, and 51.5s. to four coastguardmen and a fisherman, for puttins oil in the station whale- boat and rescuing one man from the boat Lizzie, of Bangor, which was in danger during a storm on the 3rd August.

Oct. 10.—Three men rescued the crew, con- sisting of three men of another pilot boat, which, while attempting to get first to a vessel, had been capsized by a squall off Dysart Harbour, Fifeshire.—Reward. 15s.

Oct. 12.—Five men put off from Lowestoft in a boat and saved three of the crew of the schooner Stour, of Harwich, whose boat had capsized while returning to the vessel, which was lying in the roads during a N.N.E. gale.—Reward, 3Z. 2«. 6d!.

Oct. 15.—Seven men saved, at some risk, the crew of four men of the dandy Success, of Bideford, which was driven on the rocks at Billage Point, near Ilfracombe, during a strong gale from the E.N.E.—Reward, 51. 5s.

Oct 26.—Six men put oft in a boat from the smack Tyro, of Aldborough, to the assistance of the barge Topaz, which sunk off Sizewell, Suf- folk, during a moderate gale from the S.S.W.

The crew, however, were unfortunately drowned.

Nov. 11.—Three fishermen and four members of the Royal Irish Constabulary rescued two men whose boat had capsized near Aranmore Island, co. Donegal.—Reward 51. 5s.

Nov. 5.—Voted 3Z. to four men for rescuing four men, whose boat had struck on a rock and had sunk in the Sound of Harris during stormy weather on the 28th December, 1884.

The following is a copy of a Handbill circulated on the Coasts of the United Kingdom by the Institution, for the purpose of informing Boatmen and others that it encourages laudable exertions to save Life from Shipwrecks: — TO BOATMEN AND OTHERS To encourage prompt and energetic exertions in time of Danger on the part of Boatmen and Others, by quickly putting off to save Life in CASES of WRECKS on the Coasts of the British Isles, either by SHORE-BOATS OR OTHER MEANS, Cjxe taiional ipfe-hrsi Jf Rewards of Money or Medals. In all cases the Rewards are given without further delay than is necessary to obtain proof of the merits of each case, and to ensure their being paid to the right parties.
