NEWBIGGIN.—At about 5 P.M. on, the 14th October the ss. Northumberland, of Newcastle, ran into the bay for shelter during a very severe storm and very high sea. In reply to signals of distress shown by her the Life-boat William Hop- Teinson of Brighouse put off, placed twomen on board, and brought her to an anchorage. As her anchor was not likely to hold, a kedge was run out, and the crew of four men were taken ashore for safety. The vessel fortunately rode out the storm, and her crew took her to the Tyne on the following morning, the weather having moderated. She was bound from Leith to Middlesbrough with iron railway plates..
