Shore-Boat Services Rewarded In 1880

Jan. 1.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Insti- tution, with a copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, to the EARL of DUMORE, and 51. to three fishermen, in acknowledgment of their gallant services in putting off in an open boat, and proceeding, at one o'clock in the morning, a distance of eleven miles through a very heavy sea, and bringing"* ashore the passengers, seven in number, of the yacht Aslarte, of Glasgow, which vessel had sunk in the Sound of Harris, N.B., during a hurricane from the S.W., on the 22nd September, 1879, those on board her having to take refuge on a small island.

Jan. 27.—Two men put off in a boat and assisted to save sixteen seamen belonging to H.M.S. Hecla, from a wherry which had been run into by a steamer off Portsmouth.—Reward, 21.

Jan. 29.—Five men put off in a boat and saved four men from the boat of the schooner Viscata, of New Quay, Cardiganshire, which had sunk about twelve miles W. of Bardsey. The men had been in the boat about twelve hours, and were much exhausted, having been pulling I all night, and the weather being intensely cold. —Reward, 21.

Feb. 5.—Voted .12. to Mr. JOHN BYNOW, chief boatman in charge of H.M. Coastguard at Clontarf, Dublin, and 22. to his crew of four men, for putting off in the Coastguard boat, at some risk, and saving the crew of seven men from the brigantine Alice Woods, of Ardrossan, which was wrecked on the North Bull, Clontarf, during a moderate easterly gale on the 20th November.

Feb. 11.—Mr. KENEALY, Coastguard Officer, and his crew of five men, put off in the Coast- guard whale-boat, and saved, at some risk, the crew of four men from the smack Ann, of Dover, which had stranded off No. 2 Battery, Dun- geness, Kent, during a strong E. breeze.— Reward, 72.

Feb. 12.—Two men rescued two Coastguard- men, whose boat, while returning ashore from the Coastguard cutter Stag, had been capsized by a heavy sea in Skerries Beads.—Reward, 11.

Feb. 15 & 16.—Thirteen fishermen put off in their boats from Blackrock, Co. Louth, and rescued the crews, numbering in all thirteen men, from the brigantine Parkside, of White- haven, brigantine Stdla, of Drogheda, and schooner Mary Ann, of Annagassoii, which had stranded at Blackrock during a gale from S.E. —Reward 91.

April 4.—Mr. WILLIAM FYNES, Chief Boat- man of H.M. Coastguard, and five other men, put off in the Coastguard boat from Bingsend, Dublin, and saved two men from a boat which was in distress off Pigeonhouse Point, during a fresh westerly gale.—Reward, 61.

April 21.—Four men rescued two other men from a yawl which had been upset while board- ing the Norwegian barque Nora, off Arthurstown, Co. Waterford, during a gale of wind from S.S.W.—Reward, 21.

May 2.—Two men rescued two other men from a hooker which, while proceeding from Halfmace to Kinwarra, Co. Galway, with sea- weed, had been struck by a sudden squall from the N.W., and capsized about a quarter of a mile S. of Mace Head.—Reward, 15s.

May 8.—Three men rescued four persons from a boat laden with seaweed, which was in a sinking condition at Island Crone, Co. Donegal, during a fresh N.E. gale.—Reward, II. 10s.

May 18.—r-Three men saved three persons from a skiff which, while crossing Carlingford Bar during a S.E. wind, had sunk, the boat being leaky, and a strong flood tide running at the time.—Reward, 11. 2s. 6d.

June 11.—Three men put off in a curragh and saved two other men from a boat which had been capsized in Ballinakill Bay, Co. Galway, during a fresh S.W. wind.—Reward, H. 10s.

June 16.—The master and crew of the schooner Margaret, of Fleetwood, saved the crew of three men of the schooner Solus, of Wig- town, which had caught fire in Wigtown Bay.— Reward, 51.

July 9.—Three men went out in a boat and saved four persons whose boat, while passing through Elbow Sound, Slyne Head, had missed stays and grounded during a N. wind.—Reward, U. 10«.

Sept. 15.—Mr. B. MILLER, Coxswain of the North Berwick Life-boat, three of the crew of that boat, and nine other men, waded into the sea and rescued the crew of the schooner Stella, of Drogheda, which was totally wrecked near Seacliffe during a N.E. gale and heavy sea.— Beware?, 81 10s.

Oct. 10.—Twenty men put off from Corton. in the salvage boat Refuge, and, at much risk, saved the crew of seven men from the brigantine Hope, of Portsmouth, which foundered suddenly off Corton during squally weather.—Reward, 101.

Oct. 28.—Twenty-three Whitby men rescued, by means of a hawser, the crew, consisting of five men, from the schooner Sarah, of Portsmouth, which was wrecked at Upgang, Yorkshire, dur- ing a hurricane from the E.N.E.—Reward, 11. 15s.

Oct. 29. —Eleven men saved, by means of lines, the crew, consisting of six men, from the brig Violet, of Whitby, which was wrecked on Hoik- ham Beach, Norfolk, during a heavy gale from the E.N.E.—Reward, 61.

Nov. 4.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Insti- tution, and a copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, to Mr. N. G. HATCH, mate of the ship Berkshire,of London, and 11. to four of the crew of that vessel, for putting off in a boat and saving two of the crew of the brig Marys, of Whitby, which was wrecked on the Black Bock, at the entrance to Falmouth Harbour, during a heavy E.N.E. gale and high sea on the 22nd October.

Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, to Captain RICHARD SHERRIS, harbour- master at Falmouth, and 11. 10s. to the crew of three men of his steam launch, for rescuing the master of the above-named vessel.

Also 11. to three men for rescuing the crew of two men from the schooner Esther Mary, of Cardigan, which was wrecked near Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, during stormy weather on the 9th of May.

Nov. 16.—Four men put off in a boat and rescued four men from a punt which was in' danger off Kessingland, during a moderate breeze from the E.—Reward, ]/.

Nov. 25.—Eleven men put off in a coble and rescued the crew of two men from the ketch Isabella, of Lynn, which was wrecked on the rocks off Redcar, Yorkshire, during a strong S.W. gale.—Reward, 51. 10s.

Dec. 2.-Voted the thanks of the Institution to Mr. WILLIAM PREVIL, of Redcar, for assisting to save, by means of a rope, the crew of the German barque Minna, which had stranded off Redcar, on the 28th November.
