Shore-Boat Services Rewarded In 1879

Jan. 2.—Voted the Silver Medal and U. to Mr.

JAMES MACKAY for saving two boys by swimming at great risk to a boat, which, had been swamped while attempting to cross the Bar of Tongue, tine Margaret, of Rye, which was wrecked on Blakeney Sands, off the coast of Norfolk, on the 15th December.

Down, and three others, pat off in a boat and saved seven persons from the barque Helton, of Maryport, which had capsized in Warren Point Roads, during a gale from the S.l£. — Reward, 4J.

Jan. 16. — Two fishermen of Ilfracombe rescued two men, whose boat had upset off that place, during a fresh E. -wind. One of the rescued men unfortunately died soon after being lauded, from the effects of Reward, l.

Jan. 17. — Five men put off in a boat and, at risk of life, saved five men from the lugger Friends, which had stranded at the mouth of S.E. gale.—Reward, 51.

Jan. 21.—Mr. DENNIS CONNOR, Chief Officer of H.M. Coastguard at Rosslare, Ireland, and his crew of eight men, put off in their boat auii saved the crew of twelve men from the barque Sellen, of Liverpool, which had stranded near Rosslare during a strong wind from the S.E.—Reward, , a copy to Mr.

Feb. 6.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institution Chief Boatman in charge of H.M. Coastguard, and 61. 10s. to his crew, for saving, at considerable risk, five of the crew of the schooner Marie Louise, of Gothenburg, which was wrecked at Dymchurch, Kent, during a fresh E.S.E. gale, on the 8th January.

Also the Silver Medal of the Institution, a copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, and 17., to HENRY STEVENS, gunner, 10th Brigade Royal Artillery, for swimming out twice, at very great risk, to the brigantine Princess Royal, with the. view of saving some of her crew, that vessel having been wrecked at Camden Fort, near Cork, on the night of the 24th December.

Also 2/. to the Master of the steam-tug Nelson, gale, on the iStli September.

Also 31. to six men for putting off in a boat from Southwold, Suffolk, and saving ten men from the brig Cowen, of South Shields, which, had struck on the Kentish Knock Sands, during a strong S.W.

wind, on the 31st December.

Also 2/. 10s. to three men for saving three men from a ship's boat which had been capsized be- tween Knightstone and Anchor Head, in Westou Bay, on the 21st December.

to Mr. F. S. PESKY, Mr. HORATIO E. PRITCHARD, Mr. W. LEIGH, and Mr. J. ELFORD SJIYTHE, for wading into the sea, and, at considerable risk, assisting to save the crew of four men of the French lugger Ange, which was wrecked at Porth- curnow Sands, Cornwall, during a S.S.E. gale and heavy sea on the 1st February.

March 12.—Three Penmon pilots put off in a boat and saved the crew of live men from the brigantine Hawendale, of Aberystwith, which sunk on the Prince Regent Rocks during a strong N.

March 20.-—Some Newbiggin men put off in a coble from that place, and rescued the crew of Holmestranei, Norway, during a strong S.S.E. wind.

April 3.—Voted the thanks of the Institution to EmvARP HUJIBY, of H.M. Coastguard at Southsea, for rescuing from the water and restoring a woman into the sea from Southsea beach on the night of the 14th. Match, April 9.—JOHN and THOMAS BotpfD saved a man whose boat had sunk after striking on the Munkston Koek in the Bristol Channel. He took refuge on the rock, but he was in great danger there, as the flowing tide was rapidly coming in, and the surf was breaking over the rock when he was rescued.—Reward, 2Z.

April 10.—JAMES PARSONS, of Clevedon, put off in a small boat, at much risk, and saved the engineer of the steam-tug El/, during very cold and stormy -weather,—Bswasd, 11.

June 6.—Voted 31. to four of the Dover Life-boat men, forming the crew of the galley punt Corsair's during a. strong wind and heavy swell, on the 6th December.

June 24.—Three persons put off in a boat and rescued two other persons who, while crossing the ford at Inny river, co. Kerry, with a horse and cart, between two and three o'clock in the morning, had been carried away towards the sea, the river being at the time in a swollen state through heavy rain.—Reward, Zl.

July 12.—Four men saved another man from a boat which had been capsized off Warren-point, co. Down.—Reward, 11. 5».

July 24,—Three men put off in a boat, at some risk, and saved a man from the lugger Nicholas, of Wexford, which had struck upon a rock and while running for the shore foundered off Greenore Head, co. Wexford, during a strong S.W. breeze.

Voted the thanks of the Institution to Capt.

J. THOMAS, and 11. each to the first mate, and two of the crew of the steamer Prince of Wales, of Liverpool, for saving two men from a canoe which had sunk in Rock Channel during a strong N.W.

breeze on the 5th July. The two men, who were quite unconscious, were got into the steamer's boat, and with difficulty taken on board and landed at Menai Bridge.

Aug. 15.—Seven men and two boys put off in a boat and saved seven of the crew of the barque Julie, of Drammen, which had struck on a rock on the west side of Fair Isle, Shetland, and sank, during a dense fog.—Reward, 51.

Aug. 20.—Two men proceeded through the surf in a small Life-boat kept at Tramore, Ireland, for the purpose of rendering assistance to bathers in distress, and saved a man who was in danger of being drowned.—Reward, 11.

Aug. 25.—Six men put off in a Coastguard boat from Ballydavid, Ireland, and, at some risk, saved sir persons from the yacht Vesta, of Queenstown, which had parted one of her cables, and was in a dangerous position off Smerwick, co. Kerry, during a N.N.W. gale.—Reward, 61.

Sept. 5.—Three men put off in a boat and rescued, at some risk, two other men from a boat which had been capsized off Harwich, m a heavy sea.—Reward, SI.

Sept 25.—Four men put off in a boat and saved, at considerable risk, in a rough sea, three persons who had taken refuge on a small island called Beoster, Shetland, their boat having struck upon a rock, and been totally wrecked during hazy weather.

Oct. 2.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institution, and a copy of the vote inscribed on vellum, to Miss ELLEN FRANCES PRIDEAUX BRUNE, Miss GERTRUDE ROSE PRIDEAUX BRUNE, Miss MARY KATHERINE PRIDEAUX BRUNE, Miss BEATRICE MAT PRIDEAUX BRUNE, and Miss NORA O'SHAUGHNESSY, in acknowledgment of their intrepid and prompt services in proceeding, through a heavy surf, in their rowing-boat and saving, at considerable risk of life, a sailor from a boat which had been capsized by a squall of wind off Bray Hill, Padstow Harbour, Cornwall, on the 9th August, When the accident occurred, the ladies' boat was being towed astern of a fishing-boat, and Miss ELLEN PRIDEAUX BRUNE, with great gallantry and determination, asked to be cast off, and, with her companions, she pro- ceeded with all possible despatch to the rescue of the drowning sailor. All the ladies showed great courage, presence of mind, and marked ability in the management of their small boat, and ran great risk in getting the man into it, on account of the strong tide and sea on at the time.

Voted also the thanks of the Institution to the Hon. J. G. P. VEREKER, and to SAMUEL BATE, late Coxswain of the Institution's Padstow Life- boat, who were also instrumental in saving a boy who had been thrown out of the same boat.

Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, to GEORGE REYNOLDS, Commissioned Boatman of H.M. Coastguard, at Goodwick, Pem- brokeshire, and 1?. each to three other men, for putting off in a Coastguard boat, at very great risk (their boat being filled twice by the heavy seas before getting to the vessel), and saving the crew of three men from the smack Jane and Margaret, of Newport, Pembrokeshire, which had been driven on the rocks while attempting to make Newport harbour during a fresh N.N.W. gale on the night of the 16th August.

Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, to the Rev. P. VYVYAN ROBINSON, and 25Z. to forty-one fishermen and Coastgnardmen at Cadgwith and the Lizard, Cornwall, for putting off in shore-boats and saving at some risk sixty- nine persons from the steamer Brest, of Glasgow, whit}h was wrecked between Cadgwith and the Lizard, during a fog, on the 6th September.

Oct. 14.—Three men put off in a boat, during a gale of wind from the N.N.E., and saved eight of the crew of the ketch Notre Same, of Boulogne, which had stranded on the East Sands, off Blake- ney, on the Norfolk Coast.—Reward, 11. 10s.

Oct. 17.—Three men also put off in a boat and saved the crew of two men from the flat Sarah, of Carnarvon, which was totally wrecked oft Rhyl, North Wales, during a strong N.W. wind and heavy sea.—Reward, 11.10s.

Oct. 20.—Four men put off in a boat and saved two men from a boat which lad been struck by a sudden squall and capsized in Poole Harbour, Dorset.—Reward, It 10*.

Hie following is a copy of a Handbill circulated on the Coasts of the United Kingdom by the Institution, for the purpose of informing Boatmen and others that it encourages laudable exertions to save Life from Shipwrecks:— TO BOATMEN AND OTHERS.

To encourage prompt and energetic exertions in time of Danger on the part of Boatmen and Others, by qnickly putting off to save Life in CASES of WRECKS on the Coasts of the British Isles, either by SHOEE-BOATS OE OTHEE MEANS, ®% lUnml Rational f ife-Iraat f nsiiluthra GBASTS Rewards of Money or Medals. In all.cases the Eewards are given without further delay than is necessary to obtain proof of the merits of each ease, and to ensure their being paid to the right parties.
