Shore-Boat Services Rewarded In 1876

Jan. 6.—Voted 37. to 6 men of Ballyetherland, Co. Donegal, for saving 6 other men whose boat had been destroyed by a whale off St. John's Point, on the 3rd November.

Also 31. to 5 men for rescuing 2 others from a fishing boat which had capsized near Sinnott's Gap, Co. Wexford, on the 11 th November.

Also 21. to GEORGE NF.WSON, and 51. 5s. to 15 other Gorleston men, for saving, by means of lines, the crew of 3 men from the ketch Three Anns, of Goole, which was wrecked at Gorleston, on the 6th December.

Feb. 3.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institu- tion and 51. to Mr. JOHN CARRINGTON, master of the steam-tug Liverpool, of Harwich, and 97. to 4 other men, for putting off in a boat from the tog and saving the crew of 9 men from the Norwegian barque Hunter, of Krageroe, which was wrecked on the Shipwash Sands during an easterly gale, on the 7th Jan. 107. were also granted to the other 10 men forming the crew of the tug.

Also 101. to Mr. SAMUEL WHYARD, master of the smack Jemima, of Orford, and his crew of 6 men, in acknowledgment of their laudable ser- vices on the occasion of the wreck of the Hunter.

Also 17. to 6 men for putting off in a boat and saving a boy who had got adrift in a small leaky boat in Colwyn Bay.

Feb. 18.—Mr. THOMAS BUTTER, 2nd coxswain of the North Sunderland Life-boat, and 9 other men, put off in two cobles and brought ashore the crew of 4 men from the stranded brigantine Lassie, of Sunderland, during a heavy N.W. gale.

March 8.—2 men saved 2 other men from a ferry boat which had been caught by a squall and capsized in Strangford Lough, during a strong N.W. gale. Reward 17.

March 29.—The crew, numbering 14 men, of a North Sunderland coble, rescued the crew of 4 men of the German schooner Renskea, which was wrecked on the Fame Islands during a S.E. wind and heavy sea. Reward 107. 10s.

April 6.—Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, and 37. to Mr. EDWARD CABR, chief officer of H.M. Coastguard at Cush- endale, Co. Antrim, and 27. each to his crew of 4 men, for putting off in their galley, during a fresh wind from S.E. by S., and a very heavy sea, on .the 12th Feb., and saving, at much risk, the crew of 3 men from the sloop Sal/y, of Irvine, which had sunk at GJenariffe, Co. Antrim.

Also the thanks of the Institution, on vellum, and 37. to Mr. L. WAITERS, master of the steam- tug Michael Kelly, of Dundalk, and 17. each to the crew of 4 men of the steamer, for rescuing 5 men from the brigantine William Nelson, of Dundalk, which had gone ashore on Dundalk Bar during an E.S.E. gale on the 20th Nov.

May 4.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institu- tion and the sum of 37. to Mr. MICHAEL Sn ANAHAN ' and to Mr. DENNIS HARRINGTON, of Bere Island co. Cork, for descending, at imminent risk of life, a precipitous cliff between 200 and 300 feet high, and rescuing 4 of the crew of the brigantine Joseph Howe, of London, which was wrecked on I Bere Island, during foggy and blowing weather, on 1 the 18th February.

May 4.—5 men of Holy Island saved the master and one of the crew from the rigging of the steamer Calcium, of Kirkcaldy, which had sunk on the Goldstone Rock during foggy weather, on the previous night.—Reward 21. 10s.

May 19 H. J. HART, and 2 other men, put off in a boat and rescued 2 men from a Gravesend wherry which had capsized off Folkestone, during a fresh N.E. breeze. Reward 17.

May 25.—2 men belonging to Antrim, saved 2 other men from a boat which had capsized on Lough Neagh.—Reward 17.

June 1.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institu- tion, and 17. to Mr. RICHARD BILLETT, Chief Boat- man of H.M. Coastguard, and coxswain of the Institution's Life-boat at Lydd, and 17. each to 4 other coastguard men, for putting off in their boat, and taking off the master and his wife from the barque Ilmatar, of Finland, which had stranded off Dungeness on the 18th May. Great risk was incurred in performing this service, the boat being once capsized in launching.

Also the Silver Medal of the Institution to Mr. R. J. BARTHOLOMEW, and its thanks, inscribed on vellum, to Mr. C. O'NEILL, JOHN BELL, and PETER McKiNNON, for putting off in a boat from the steamer Argyll, of Rothe&ay, in ft gale of wind and heavy sea, at great risk, and rescuing one of the crew of the Russian barque Tmemus, which had been run into while at anchor, and had sunk on Skelmorlie Bank, in the Clyde, on the 23rd Dec. The thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, were also voted to Capt. CAMPBELL, Master of the Argyll, for his co-operation on the occasion.

Aug. 2.—Mr. THOMAS RAVERTY, Chief Officer of Coastguard at Ardglass, Co. Down, and his crew of 7 men, saved at great risk, the crew of 6 men from the fishing smack Olive Branch, of Arklow, which was wrecked near Ardglass Harbour during a strong S.S.W. gale.—Reward 107.

Aug. 10.—3 Wicklow men rescued 4 persons from a boat which had capsized near Wicklow Bar, during afresh S.S.W. breeze.—Reward 17.

Aug. 14.—3 men belonging to Rhosneigir, Anglesey, saved a man from a boat which had been swamped in Aberffraw Bay.—Reward 27.

Sept. 6.—4 Caister beachmen put off in one of their yawls, during a strong S.S.W. wind, and considerable sea, and, with difficulty and risk, saved 3 persons from the mast of the trawling- boat Victoria, which had stranded and sunk on the Barber Sand. Reward 107.

Nov. 2.—Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, and 27., to Mr. WILLIAM CAHILL, Chief Boatman in charge of H.M. Coast- guard at Anna/ong, Co. Down, and 27. each to 5 other men, for rescuing with much difficulty, and at great risk, the crew of 4 men from the barque Troubadour, of Liverpool, which was wrecked at Annalong, during a strong wind and in a heavy sea, on the 3rd October.

Nov. la.—10 men put off in a coble and landed 5 of the crew of the brig Gearye and Elizabeth, of j Sunderland, that vessel having been run ashore at Bridlington during an E.S.E. gale.—Reward 27. 10s.

Nov. 18.—The crew of a coble, consisting of 3 men and a boy, brought safely ashore the crew of the Danish Brig Geary, which was wrecked off North Blyth.—Reward 27. 15«.

Dec. 7.—Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellam, and 17. to Mr. JAMES BARRY, Commissioned Boatman of H.M. Coastguard at Elie, N.B.; and 17. each to 4 fishermen for saving 3 men from the lugger Sea Witch, of Elie, which had capsized off that port during a strong S.W.
