At 9.50 A.M. on the 22nd October, the Life-boat of this Station, the People's Journal, No. 1, was launched for the purpose of saving the crew of the barque Eyack, of Langesund in Norway, which was wrecked north of Battray Head, a hard easterly gale blowing at the time.

The Life-boat did not succeed in reaching the stranded vessel, however, till the crew had been saved by the coastguard with the rocket apparatus. After dark on the same day, the Danish smack Nathalie Jacdbine, of Nibe, Jutland, drove ashore near the entrance of the South Harbour, •while attempting to enter it. The Life- boat was promptly urged to the spot, and succeeded in saving the crew of 4 men..
