Shore-Boat Services Rewarded In 1875

Jan. 1.—JOHN ROWNAN, of Knalton, Co. Wa- terford, on the occasion' of the wreck of the barque Gwmissa, at Knalton Cove, afforded shel- ter to 3 of the crew who had got ashore, and af- terwards assisted to save 6 others of- the crew, all of whom were taken to his house and provided with food; he also procured medical attendance for the men, one of whom was in a very precarious condition when landed.—Reward. 3i.

Jan. 6.—Voted the thanks of the Institution to Mr. JOHN C. DAVIES, of Fishguard, and 21. 10s. to 5 .other men, for putting t if ia a boat and saving 3 men, whose boat, during a N.N.E. gale, had been capsized off Fishguard Harbour on the 20th November.

Also II, to 2 men of Porlock, Somerset, for saving 2 of the crew of the smack Nancy, of New- port, which w«s totally wrecked on Porlock Gore Point during squally weather on the 14th Aug.

Also II. to JAMES DUNN, assistant-coxswain of the Wells Life-boat, for saving 2 men from a small boat belonging to the Coastguard at Wells, which had been capsized off that place during squally weather on the 11th Nov.

Also II. to DAVID EVANS, a young seaman of Pwllheli, who had saved a fisherman, whose boat had been capsized off that place during a strong wind on the 16th Nov. 1872.

Also 101. to some men belonging to West Har- tlepool who had been instrumental in saving, by means of ropes, the crews, 11 in number, of the brig Beeswing, of "Whitby, and the schooner Hebe, of Littlehampton, which were totally wrecked near the pier at West Hartlepool, during a hur- ricane from N.N.E., on the 9th Dee.

Also 91 in consideration of the services ren- dered by 7 Donna Nook men, who, with the help of four horses, were instrumental in saving the crew of 6 men of the brigantine JDea, of London, which was wrecked on the Lancashire coast in a very heavy N.E. gale on the Hth Dec.

Also 4t, to 4 men of Wells, Norfolk, who put off in a boat and were successful in rescuing 2 of the crew of the brig Vemoniro, of Genoa, which, during a strong N.E. wind, had been driven on Wells East Sands on the 9th Dec.

Also 2£. to 6 men of Whitby, who descended the cliff at that place and saved the crew of 8 men of the brig Britannia, of Shoreham, which was wrecked on Whitby Scarr during a H .E. gale on the 8th Dec.

Also 15Z. to the crews of three boats belonging to Lydd, Dungeness, which put off to the stranded barque Diwm, of Riga, near Dungeness Point, during a strong gale, and in a very rough sea, cm the 13th Dec. Two of the boats were, fortunately, enabled to save the shipwrecked crew of 13 men.

Jan. '24,—Eight men put off from Newport, Pembroke, in a boat, and saved 7 men from the schooner Edith, of Newry, which had stranded on Newport Sand during a fresh W.N/W. gale.— Reward, SI. The sum of I. was also granted to the owner of the boat used in performing this service.

Feb. 4.—Voted 51. 10s. to 8 men belonging to Tory Island, Co. Donegal, for putting off in a shore- boat, and saving one of the crew of the steamer Fairholm, of Glasgow, which struck on the island and immediately sank, during a thick fog on the 22nd Aug. last.

Also 11. 10s. to some Lynmouth men who had gone to the assistance of 3 men belonging to two fishing boats, which were in danger off Lynmouth during a strong S.S.E. wind on the 15th Dec.

Also 11. to JOHN KENNEDY, of Ballinabuck, Co. Kerry, for descending a cliff and saving the crews, 7 in number, of two canoes which had been un- able to land at Brandon Creek, Dingle Bay, and had been driven in under the cliffs while the wind was blowing a fresh gale from the S.E., on the 31st Dec.

Also 2/. to the crew of 3 men of the coble Brotherly Lam, of Staithes, for saving 3 men from the coble Sir Titus Salt, which had been capsized in a squall on the 16th Dec.

Feb. 5.—MICHAEL DEMPSEY and another man put off from their vessel, the schooner Sunbeam, of Arklow, and saved 2 men from a boat which had been capsized on Arklow Bar, during a S.W. wind.—Reward '21.

March 4.—Voted the Silver Medal of the So- ciety to Mr. ALEXANDER RITCHIE, farmer, of Sanda Island, N.B., in acknowledgment of his gallant and persevering conduct in wading into the surf end saving 3 of the crew of the barque Perica, of Glasgow, and afterwards putting off in a boat with three other men, and saving 7 persons from the same vessel, which was wrecked on Sanda Island, during a gale of wind and in a heavy sea, on the 2nd Jan. 5(. 2s. were also granted to the men who assisted in the performance of these services.

Also the Silver Medal to Mr. JOHN LOSE, Chief Officer of H.M. Coastguard at Swanage, and l-'i. to 12 Coastguardmen, for gallantly putting off in their boats and saving the crew of 6 men of the brigantine Wild Wave, of Exeter, which was wrecked on Peverell Ledge, Dorset, in a gale of wind and heavy sea on the 23rd Jan.

Voted also the thanks of the Institution, in- scribed on vellum, to Lieut. JOHN WINCHESTER, R.N.R., and 3/. to 3 other men, for putting off in a coble, and making three attempts to succour the crew of the barque John George, of Antwerp, wrecked on Hamburgh Sands, in a strong wind and heavy sea, on the 9th Dec, The North Sun- derland Life-boat was eventually enabled to save 1! men from that wreck.

March ».—Nine Filey fishermen went out in a fishing coble and saved the crew of 5 men from the brig Seonomy, of Scarborough, which was wrecked off Filey during a gale of wind from "W.S.W.—Reward, 61. 15».

March 19.—The crew, consisting of 6 men, of a Gorleston shore-boat, saved 3 of the crew of the disabled brig Tweerlside, of Cley, in Yarmouth Roads, during a fresh N. wind.—Reward, 3/.

April 15.—Eighteen men put off in two boats from the Sciliy Islands in a dense fog, and lowed ashore two boats containing the crew, 30 in num- ber, of the steamer Zelda, of Liverpool, which had struck on the rocks near Bryhar Island, and afterwards foundered during a N.M.W. wind.— reward, 51.

May S!.—Three men went off in a boat from St. Justinian, and brought ashore 3 men from the Bitches Rock, in Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire, their boat having struck on the rock, and been totally weckced.—Reward, II.

June 5.—Four men of Arklow rescued 2 men whose boat had got across the tow-rope of a vessel, and had been thereby capsized, in Arklow Bay.— Reward, II.

June 16.—JOHN A. MURPHY", Chief Boatman in charge at the Mulroy (Ireland) Coastguard Station, and 3 other Coastguardmen, put off in their Life-boat from Mulroy Station, and rescued the crew, consisting of 4 men, from the schooner Chrysolite, of Glasgow, which had gone ashore on the Campion Bank, during a fresh gale from the .N.—Reward, 41.

June 23.—Three Mundesley men proceeded out in a boat, and saved 5 persons from a pleasure boat which had been upset off Mundesley.— Reward, U, July 4.—The crew of a pilot-boat of Gorleston, saved the crew, 4 in number, of the schooner Shepherdess, of Lowestoft, who had taken to their boat on their vessel foundering near the Gorton Sand.- Reward, 5i.

July 10.—Six men put off in a boat from the steamer Bohemian, of Liverpool, and assisted to save 5 men from another boat, which was cap- sized in St. Mary's Roads, Scilly Islands.—Re- ward, 61.

Aug. 4.—JOHN and THOMAS CASS rescued 2 men from the coble Prince, of Whitby, which had iieen struck by a heavy sea. and capsized while entering the harbour there.—Reward, ll.

Aug. 11.—Two young man employed as waiters at the Eccles Hotel, Bantry, Ireland, went off in a boat after midnight and rescued 2 of the crew of the yacht Clara, of Skibbereen, whose boat had been capsized in Bantry Bay, whilst they were going off from the shore to the yacht after mid- night —Reward, 4/.

Sept. 2.—Voted the thanks of the Institution to Mr. JOHN CARR, Chief Officer of Her Majesty's Customs at Warrenpoint, Ireland, and It to 4 other men for putting off in a boat, and saving the crew, 5 in number, of a gig belonging to the JVewry Rowing Club, which had been capsized while out practising off Warrenpoint on the 27th July.

Also the thanks of the Institution and 10s. each to 2 youths, named ALBERT and HARRY BROWN, of Weymouth, for saving a man, whose boat had been caught in a squall and capsized off Weymouth Harbour on the 6th Aug.

Also the thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, and ll., to Mr. JOHN MADDEN, Chief Boatman in charge of the Sutton (Dublin) Coast- guard Station; It. 10s. to JAMES ELLIOTT, and IOs. each to 4 other Coastguardmen for putting off in their boat, with the view of rendering as- sistance to the crew of the schooner Aaron Belle, of Aberystwith, which had gone ashore near the Sutton Coastguard Station on the 19th Jan. last, during a strong gale from W.S.W.

Sept. 7.—Three men went off in a small punt, and saved 3 men from a Coastguard boat belonging to Morris Castle (Wexford) Coastguard Station, which had been capsized off that place.—Re- ward, ll.

Sept. 27.—Five men put off from Beaumaris in a boat, during a S."W. gale, and saved the master from the rigging of the flat Monarch, of Preston, that vessel having parted from her anchor and sunk on the Lavan Sands.—Reward, 5(.

Oct. 14.—Nine men of West Hartlepool saved, by means of fines thrown from the North Pier, the crew, 9 in number, from the wreck of the brig Jiolden, of Brevig.—Reward, vl.

Oct. 14.—Six men of Hartlepool put off in a pilot eol !e and saved 2 men from another coble, which had been swamped near the Heugb Break- water.—Reward, 2f.

Oct. 23.—The crew, 3 in number, of the trawler Ark, of Mevagissey, saved the crew of 2 men of the trawler Brothers, which had been struck by a sudden squall and bad sunk off Mevagissey Harbour.—Reward, ll.

Oct. 27. —A shore-boat's crew of 5 men saved I of the crew of the fishing-boat Two Brothers, who had been knocked overboard by the sail jibbing when that vessel was entering Yarmouth Harbour with a strong E.S.E. wind and heavy sea.—Reward, 2f.

Dec. 2.—Voted the Silver Medal of the Institu- tion to Mr. PHILIP GEORGE, coxswain of the Caister Life-boats, and to Mr. S. BISHOP, Chief Boatman of H.M. Coastguard at that place, and 101. to 35 other Coastguardmen and beachmen, for saying 3 of the crew of the schooner Wild Wave, of Sunderland, which was wrecked on Caister beach, in a heavy sea, on the lyth November.

Also 5t in aid of the local fund for rewarding 21 Scarborough men for going off in a yawl from that place, on the 19th November,and savings men whose boat had been caught in a squall and who were in very great danger.
