The ship Maria, of Dunedin, came ashore here during a fresh wind from the 8.E., on the 22nd Jan. An effort was made by the crew to get her off; but a gale springing up from the E., ac- companied by a heavy sea, placed their lives in great jeopardy, for the vessel, which drew 19 feet of water, had grounded on the outer sandbank, where the sea was breaking over her.
