Maria, of Dunedin

The ship Maria, of Dunedin, came ashore here during a fresh wind from the 8.E., on the 22nd Jan. An effort was made by the crew to get her off; but a gale springing up from the E., ac- companied by a heavy sea, placed their lives in great jeopardy, for the vessel, which drew 19 feet of water, had grounded on the outer sandbank, where the sea was breaking over her. The Life-boat Recompense was quickly got out, and was instrumental in saving the crew of 18 men, and the master's wife, from the stranded ship,.
