Ms Oke of Cheshire scooped the £5,000 first prize in the Summer Lifeboat
Lottery and enjoyed a visit to Hoylake Lifeboat Station to celebrate her win.

25th Octo- ber. A yacht had been reported to be in distress, but as a steamer was standing by and a tug was on its way, the life-boat was recalled shortly after leaving.—Rewards, £7 15*. 6d..

Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.—18th February, 1939. A rocket had been reported off the Isle of Skye, but later it was thought to have been a meteor, as no vessel in need of help could be found.—Rewards, £8 17s. 9d..

Port Askaig, Isle of Islay.—10th January.

A trawler had been wrecked off Ardbeg and had foundered in fifteen minutes. Four of her crew were lost, but nine scrambled on to rocks, from which eight were rescued by a steamer...

Port St. Mary, and Port Erin, Isle of Man.—30th January. Following a report that the lights of a vessel under observation had disappeared, a search was made, but nothing could be found.

Wick, Caithness-shire, and Longhope, Orkney.—21st June, 1938. A motor boat bound from Wick to Longhope was long overdue, but a search was without result. Later it was learned that the boat had taken shelter in a cove.—Rewards: Wick, £10...

The year before (left, below) a guest for Walton and Frinton lifeboats' run was Mr Miller (I.), a physiotherapist who, blind himself, does much to help other blind people: with him is Bowman Bobby Kemp.
